Bionicle MOC: Fellest by Rahiden Bionicle MOC: Fellest by Rahiden
This is Fellest. With an oversized knife blade as his right arm and a buzzsaw as his left, Fellest is primarily a treecutter.

Beyond that, his backstory is pretty undecided, but I'd like to put a festive spin on it - here are a few options:
- Fellest is nothing more than a lumberjack, venturing out into the forest to cut down pine trees for Christmas.
- The above, but Fellest somehow absorbed the spirits of every tree that he felled, making him resemble a pine himself.
- Fellest was originally a pine tree, but came to life! He crushed the lumberjack that was about to fell him and stole his tools, and now defends his forest from festive destruction.
- The above, except that Fellest is actually out to destroy the rest of the forest, so that he can be the last tree standing!

On second thoughts, I like this one most. The felled tip of a conifer stirred itself to life, crawling along on leafy tendrils, latching onto the back of the unsuspecting lumberjack (dressed in black), branches wrapping around his neck, leaves engulfing him like a coniferous parasite, the lumberjack's screams being muffled by the foliage... and creating Fellest. Fellest then becomes the slow but determined defender of his forest, never to be cut down again!

There are a few points I'd like to raise about the MOC itself. Firstly, I am well aware that the Skrall shield is patterned red on one side, and you'll notice that the sneaky photography hides this fact. I personally don't mind it at all, since I'll be displaying Fellest on one side only, so it'll hardly be an issue.
Secondly, the massive spiky bit on his back. What even is that? I actually put it there because the Zaktan spine didn't want to curve down the back that nicely, and so I just let it stick out. Funnily enough it works as a good couterbalance for when I want to position the blade forwards like in the bottom right picture, and I like how it gives Fellest a kind of hunched appearance. Alternatively it could be some kind of defence feature, but that's the best (feeble) explanation for why there's a knife blade at the end.
All in all, Fellest is far from my best work, what with the arguably messy backspike and the legs' limited posability (well, there is a 50% chance that he's a tree, so give him a break) but I like him nonetheless.

If anyone is curious about the name, it resulted from reading through the Wiktionary article of the word 'fell' after deciding that Lumber and Feller weren't that suitable. 'Fell' is also an adjective meaning 'Of a strong and cruel nature', which goes well with some of the backstory options!

Well Fellest is a walking tree so the similarity is fairly obvious ;)

I don't know, how to put it, but where did you get the black Nuva shoulderarmor? I don't think that they're painted, cause they're too smooth to be painted (or you are a very good handler of the airbrushes!).

Thanks! As a general rule I try not to make 'popular' characters, since they tend to receive attention for all the wrong reasons. Look at my Robot Unicorn to see what I mean ^^;

It's new MOCs like this guy that make me wish you were continuing Hero Faffory :/

Fellest looks pretty darn awesome, I can't help but think of a troll though for some reason, some kind of forest troll or something. I think in terms of background I think you should keep him as being some kind of lumberjack or tree chopper himself, his tools just make him look like a lumberjack >_>

I actually have my own suggestion for him, kind of blending being a lumberjack himself, and your preferred biography. Rather than just some random lumberjack he absorbed for cutting him down, instead the guy was one of those people involved in deforestation type stuff (like what goes on down in the rainforest), so rather than stopping all trees from being cut down, Fellest instead serves as a protector against just wanton and/or wasteful destruction of trees. If he absorbed a human, he's bound to pick up at least something from them, and some of that I'm sure would be that humans still need trees and wood.... I dunno, I feel like if he absorbed a human or otherwise merged with one that'd be something he would pick up. Plus, in order for forests, especially old ones, to remain healthy, some trees have to be cut down along with other brush and such...there's a reason why forest fires are a naturally occurring thing afterall.

I guess the lack of Hero Faffory involvement means that his backstory doesn't really affect anything ^^; That's an interesting suggestion, though. I hadn't really considered that he might take on some of the human's ethical characteristics. I shall keep it in mind!

Hehe, yeah :/
Glad to have been of service, I've found that usually in the most interesting (and imo best) mergings/full-time possessions like what Fellest kind of has going on some traits from the absorbed or possessed are taken in by the one doing the deed.

Ever consider using the eraser trick to get the red off the skrall shield? Time consuming yes but it leaves the piece unharmed.
Example: budster248.deviantart.com/art/…

As a side note i imagine him being very wise due to trees living really long lives and being pals with Fissure.

I wouldn't agree with the 'unharmed' description - I'm against any kind of permanent alteration to a piece. I made sure that Niyyan's ring was removable (but I probably wouldn't do that kind of thing now!).

Your range of backstory ideas amused me; to put another spin on it, perhaps he was an artificial tree brought to life who's now trying to forge an identity in light of the multitude of real trees? I'm also guessing that you grew up using real Christmas trees, since fake trees didn't factor into your ideas.

Rahiden Featured By Owner Dec 18, 2013  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
You raise a good point - I hadn't considered artificial trees at all, despite the flurry of green scraps that we've had to clear off our living room floor for all these years. That would also conveniently explain the lack of a brown trunk.

However, I think I've found a story that I like above the others. The felled tip of a conifer stirred itself to life, crawling along on leafy tendrils, latching onto the back of the unsuspecting lumberjack, branches wrapping around his neck, leaves engulfing him like a coniferous parasite, the lumberjack's screams being muffled by the foliage... and creating Fellest. This explains the lack of brown, and if the original lumberjack were black then that works too. Fellest then becomes the slow but determined defender of his forest, never to be cut down again!

Very nice! Not sure how I feel about the head's positioning, but it's fantastic otherwise!

"Fellest" could also come from "felling" trees and "festive," the reason we have Christmas trees in the first place!

Ah, I hadn't made the connection with the word 'festive'! Though Fellest doesn't really seem like the Christmas type, what with all of his neighbours being lopped down shortly beforehand. Admittedly this was the first time I had to scrounge around Wiktionary for a name - most of the time it's Bulbapedia instead :P

To be honest, I'd think he'd be more of the "Defend-the-forest" type

however, if you ask nicely and plant a tree in place of the one you cut down for the holiday, he'd help you pick and cut a tree

For Christmas you should put some colored orbs on him and such so that he looks like a Christmas tree. Also, if you put a second skrall shield beside the other one so that they're both facing inward, you would solve the color problem. However it appears that you would need to change the mount that it's on

I don't think I could get away with making a living pine tree MOC without decorating him! Perhaps Spore could be the angel sitting on his head.
(I'd thought about putting a second Skrall shield there, but remember that the blade tips would then be pointing in opposite directions and would have a gap in between them, which I didn't really think was much of an improvement.)
