Bionicle MOC: Chinese Lion Statue by Rahiden Bionicle MOC: Chinese Lion Statue by Rahiden
MOC review: [link]

Happy Chinese New Year! :la:
Here's a stone Chinese Lion which I built specially for the occasion. The main reason for doing one is because the proportions are so laughably extreme, and because I figured I needed another mono-grey MOC. It's worth mentioning that so-called Lions can vary quite drastically in appearance, with some looking more feline while others look like dogs (or even monkeys). This one's more dog-like. My favourite part is definitely the head; the mane of Bohrok gear pieces and the use of the rubber band holder as the nose (since I don't have any grey tooth pieces) really make it for me. See the video for more details!

First off, very nice. Second, the varying shades of gray makes it very eye-appealing. It is in no way monotone, or nonlifelike. It looks very solids, as if you could drop it down the stairs and have in one (Or two pieces!) when it is done. Sorry, first thing that pops into my head. This looked like a true challenge, one worthy of a master like yourself. Honestly, it would look better in color, if you modeling after a real lion. Since you are not, then the gray is both expected, and very accurate. I hope I have not been rambling and going on and on on this thing, I just ran out of deep thoughts. :)

I think the Shiisaa statues on Okinawa look kinda like Chinese lion statues, & they technically depict a canine (I think). See en.wikia.com/wiki/shisa for more details. (The first sentence on the page states that it looks like a cross between a dog & a lion.)

Whoa, awesome! Been a while since I've seen a BIONICLE "sculpture" this nice! Most of the MOCs I see these days are just standard humanoid figures, so it's good to see something that not only deviates from a humanoid build but completely avoids traditional figure-building techniques in favor of a more irregular build that serves as a very bulky body structure. This model uses great use of varying colors and textures, such as the gears for the mane. That might be my favorite part of this model.

Why thank you! I too think that there are too many Toa-sized humanoids floating around, so I tend to avoid them when possible.

You even gave it the ball! :D Nicely done! I would recommend tying a red ribbon around it's neck as they usually do that in temples.

I admit that I haven't seen one with a red ribbon on it before, though I think it would throw off the colour scheme anyway ^^; Thanks for the comment!

One of the most imaginative MOCs I think I've ever seen (although I freely admit to being quite new to the whole idea). Even my best-beloved looked at it and said "wow".

That's really awesome! There are two Chinese lions outside a restaurant where I live, and I'm always fascinated by them every time I go there.
Also YAY for good use of a rubber band holder part!

Hmmmmm.....not really feeling the face and head. I know you said it was your favorite part, and I even looked at the video to see if looking at it from a different angle would make it stand-out more, but it just kind of looks like a big, featureless, grey blob. The eyes I didn't even see without close scrutiny, and maybe its just the grayscale, but the hole face looks flat. I do know how chinese lion/dragon things look (I googled it to make sure that I didn't have the wrong idea in my head when i looked at it, and the lions have these huge mouths.

Maybe I'm just dumb, but its not doing it for me. I will say that the mane IS genius, but as a whole, I'm not getting the Chinese Lion statue vibe, more of a grey-skinned Fido.

I admit that the head is the least accurate part of the whole thing, but that's partly because of my lack of grey teeth pieces and partly because Chinese Lions are, frankly, ugly. This head takes inspiration from dogs. Is it really that hard to see the eyes, though? Their colour and shape alone should make them stand out from the greyness of everything else.

I had to look for them. I was like "Are there...eyes? huh? Oh theeere they are. okay." Again, maybe its just me, but I had a hard time seeing any evidence of Chinese Lion in its design. Even the Mane reminded me of ears rather than any kind of mane from the angle of the larger picture.

Wow, that mane is very well done!
The body and limbs look about right and the color scheme is nice and consistant.
Just one knit pick: the brow could be more accentuated.

Thanks! In what way could the brow be more accentuated? Currently I like the way that it both makes the eyes angry and adds to the curvature of the face.

Adding more bulk to either side of that gear piece to make the eyes stand out a wee bit more?

:iconrahiden:
Rahiden Featured By Owner Feb 12, 2013  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
I see what you're getting at, but like I said the curvature of the Bohrok limbs makes the forehead area more rounded, so any additions to the gear piece would throw that off. To be honest it already sticks out slightly more than I'd like it to.

Depends what you count as 'the original statues', since their looks can range from lions to dogs to even monkeys. Try looking it up.
